September 16 marks the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer<\/strong>, commonly known as World Ozone Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ozone depletion may feel like an environmental issue from another era. Yet its history offers a valuable lesson for businesses navigating today\u2019s sustainability challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 1980s, scientists established that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), widely used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and aerosol products, were depleting the ozone layer, raising concerns about increased exposure to harmful ultraviolet radiation and its effects on human health and ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, countries adopted the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer<\/strong> in 1987. Through coordinated international action to phase out ozone-depleting substances, the ozone layer is now on a long-term path to recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Montreal Protocol is widely recognized as one of the world\u2019s most successful examples of international cooperation on an environmental challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the lesson for businesses goes beyond the importance of environmental protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is particularly relevant today is how scientific evidence changed public understanding, which in turn shaped regulation, markets, and ultimately the business environment itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a Social Issue Becomes a Business Issue<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

CFCs were once widely used across many industries because they were stable and easy to handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, as their environmental impacts became clearer, public awareness began to shift and international regulations followed. Substances that had previously been used as a matter of course became subject to regulation, requiring companies to reconsider areas such as product design, technology, equipment, and procurement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This pattern also has parallels with many of the sustainability issues companies face today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Climate change, resource circulation, human rights, and natural capital can all affect business management in a variety of ways\u2014not only through regulation, but also through customer expectations, procurement requirements, and investment decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These changes do not necessarily happen overnight. Signs of change can emerge across many areas, including scientific research, policy and regulatory discussions, customer and investor interest, and technological development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, when considering sustainability, it is important to understand where external changes may intersect with a company\u2019s own business activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honeywell: Turning Market Change into Opportunity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Regulations aimed at protecting the ozone layer required companies to adapt, but they also created opportunities for new technologies and markets to emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One example is the U.S.-based technology company Honeywell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the Montreal Protocol, CFCs were gradually phased out. Then, with the Kigali Amendment adopted in 2016, countries also agreed to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which have high global warming potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honeywell anticipated the growing need for low-global-warming-potential (low-GWP) technologies more than a decade ago and invested in the research, development, and production capacity of its Solstice\u00ae technologies. According to the company, its cumulative investment in related R&D and new production capacity has reached USD 1 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solstice\u00ae technologies are used in a wide range of applications, including automotive air-conditioning systems, supermarket refrigeration, and building insulation materials. Honeywell also stated that, as of 2021, the global adoption of these technologies had helped avoid more than 250 million metric tons of potential CO2-equivalent emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is important here is not simply that the company responded to new regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It recognized changes in society and the market and connected those changes to decisions around technology development and investment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should environmental action be seen as a cost that companies address only once it becomes necessary? Or can it also be viewed as a source of insight into future markets and customer needs?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even when companies face the same external changes, the options available to them may differ depending on how they interpret those changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Could Become the Next \u201cBusiness Issue\u201d?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Of course, no company can accurately predict every future regulatory or market change. Nor does every business need to address every sustainability issue at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
